MANY STEELERS UP FOR THE HALL

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced their 132 preliminary nominees for the 2010 class (full list here), and as expected, there is a distinct Western Pennsylvania flavor.

Several members of the Steeler family are up for enshrinement, including K Gary Anderson, LB Kevin Greene, C Dermontti Dawson, LB Hardy Nickerson, S Donnie Shell, S Carnell Lake, Coach Buddy Parker, Scout/Co-owner/VP Art Rooney Jr. (who I had the chance to interview last year), and Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau (as a player).

There are also a number of Pitt Panthers eligible for next year's class, including LB Rickey Jackson, DE Chris Doleman, OT Jimbo Covert, OG Russ Grimm, and Assistant Coach Jimmy Johnson, who went on to have a little more fame at "The U" and later as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

First-year nominees include Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, Rich Gannon, Eddie George, Emmitt Smith, Aeneas Williams, and Anderson. And before you automatically dismiss the former kicker, let me remind you that he was the "Kicker of the Decade" for the '80s and the '90s, he's second all-time in points, he was a four-time Pro Bowler, and came within one field goal of a perfect season in 1998. Of course, that kick would've sent his Vikings to the Super Bowl for the first time in 22 years, but I doubt anyone will mention that when making their case for the best player to ever come out of South Africa.
