PENN STATE SIGNS UP FOR THREE MORE YEARS OF JOEPA

From the News of the Unreal Department comes this nugget: Penn State has signed coach Joe Paterno to a three-year contract extension that keeps him there through 2011 (unless he gets a huge offer from, say, Michigan to buy him out and replace Rich Rodriguez).

The 82-year-old Paterno brings quite the resume to Happy Valley: 383 wins (most all-time), 23 Bowl game wins (also the most all-time), two National Championships, and three Big Ten Championships. Gene Chizik, he is not.

Interesting decision by the powers that be at State College. But I wonder, what's a loyal guy like longtime assistant Tom Bradley thinking right now?

I can't speak for Bradley, but my guess is that he's reconciled to being second as long as JoePa remains. It is always possible that he's got a secret guarantee of the job from the university when JoePa retires/gives up the ghost. But its been clear for a while now that as long as JoePa wants to coach, JoePa will coach. Particularly after winning 2 Big Eleven titles in the last 4 years - no way he's leaving now, and Bradley knows that.

This is Tom Bradley's team. Anyone who thinks JoePa still plays an important role in scouting, recruiting (besides his name), game plan, and game day play calling is out of touch. Joe is just a figure head who lets his assitants handle the day to day dealings a head coach normally deals with.

I wonder what's the most wins ever by an assistant coach. At least he has something to shoot for.

This is "Weekend at Bernie's" on a football field. JoePa's been dead since the late 1990's when someone started dressing him in a purple windbreaker.
