DO THE HUMPTY HUMPAL

MIKE HUMPAL

ILB - IOWA

Height: 6-3 Weight: 244 40-Time: 4.82

College Coach: Kirk Ferentz

In Round Six, the Steelers chose their second linebacker of the draft, Iowa's Mike Humpal. I'm not going to lie to you: there is very little to discuss with this pick. He's a sixth-rounder, he's not tremendously decorated, and he played for a mediocre, 6-6 Iowa Hawkeyes team. Let's just say I'm not anticipating a career of 10 Pro Bowl appearances from this spot.

Notes on Humpal:

--2007 All Big Ten Second Team

--23rd nationally with 123 tackles in 2007

--2007 Iowa team captain

--Four-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference

-- Limited by back problems early in his career

Thoughts?

As I stated above, it's the sixth round and I'm running out of steam. This is typically the depth/practice squad fodder portion of the draft, so that's where you'll likely see Humpal next.

Humpal seems to be the butt of jokes early on, but the kid can play. He gets cliched as the stiff white guy who will spend his career as a special teams kamikaze, but he was one of the more athletic linebackers at the Combine in terms of measurables. At 245 pounds, he outperformed most highly rated prospects at the position who were 10-20 pounds lighter. Excelled academically as well.
