BIG BEN GETS HIS MAN

LIMAS SWEED

WR - TEXAS

Height: 6-4 Weight: 212 40-Time: 4.52

College Coach: Mack Brown

Well, Ben Roethlisberger finally got his wish: a tall wide receiver. And they don't come much bigger than second-round pick Limas Sweed, who goes 6'4", 212 pounds.

Sweed was projected by many as a first-round pick, and much like the Steelers' first choice (Rashard Mendenhall), he fell directly into Kevin Colbert's lap at pick #53.

Sweed has some speed issues, but by all accounts has a fantastic work ethic. Early signs indicate that Steeler Nation is quite enthused with the pick.

Some notes on Sweed:

--2007 Stats: 19 catches, 306 yards, 3 TD in 6 games

--Had his senior season cut short by a lingering wrist injury that ultimately required surgery

--Caught the game-winning TD in the huge early-season 2005 game against Ohio State

--The first Longhorn drafted by the Steelers since Casey Hampton in 2001

--Sixth in Texas history with 124 catches

--Earned the "Frank Medina Rehabilitation Award"

--Not to be confused with
Peanuts character "Linus":

--First words from Limas: "The Steelers are a great team, and when I got the call, the coaches were telling me how much tradition they have up there. You always know Mean Joe Greene, and they’re always in the playoffs, plus Casey Hampton is there. To be drafted by such a traditional football team is something really similar to Texas. I know the fans will be behind them, so it’ll be a good thing. They have a great quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger, so I’m excited.”

Thoughts?

Two rounds, still no linemen. But with a severe drop-off in depth at the WR position after Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward (especially after the Incredible Offseason Adventures of Cedrick Wilson), it was a situation that needed addressed. Plus, it made Big Ben happy, which is the most important thing.

Sweed is exceptional in being down to earth, unselfconscious, and self deprecating. Remarkable for a football star at a high profile position at a high profile institution. Hard to put a value on that.

I think that Roethisberger will be as happy about that as he is about getting a 6'-4" target with 4.5 40 speed.
