--"Pirates Notebook: Littlefield says team's basics are 'better'". The best story I've read since "Inside the Pirates: Colborn merits credit for starters".
--"TheStarterWife" sent over this tidbit from the Steelers mascot contest:
"These forms along with the video submission must be received at the Steelers mailbox no later than June 30, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. Pittsburgh time. Steelers reserves the right, in its discretion, to extend the deadline as appropriate."
Best part? "PITTSBURGH TIME". Not EST, not GMT -8 . "Pittsburgh time."
--The Pirates are talking to the Braves about Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Apparently the Buccos learned nothing about trading with Atlanta after Adam LaRoche.
--Ron Cook talks down to you about Bill Cowher. Thanks for the lecture.
--Former big-leaguer Rod Beck is found dead at the age of 38.
--GM Ken Williams on the White Sox: 'I'm tired of watching this'. And his team has only had a few bad months. Imagine a team that stands pat after 15 years.
--Guess what? The Pirates are projected to have a stopgap at center field next year.
--Bill Simmons does an NHL Draft Diary. Hey, it's better than his 756th article about Durant and Oden.
--Indiana Hoosiers coach and former Ben Roethlisberger mentor Terry Hoeppner died last week, and here's a great story on the relationship he shared with Ben.
--Brett Hull is out at NBC. Few will miss him.
--Meet Autumn Sullivan Corbett Fitzsimmons Jeffries Hart Burns Johnson Willard Dempsey Tunney Schmeling Sharkey Carnera Baer Braddock Louis Charles Walcott Marciano Patterson Johansson Liston Clay Frazier Foreman Brown. That's 25 names, for those of you scoring at home.
Among the ties featured are a number of Pittsburgh sports notables (with my favorites in bold): Ray Shero, Bill Cowher, Kevin McClatchy, Dan Rooney, Robert Nutting, Mike Tomlin, Max Starks, and Dave Wannstedt, as well as many others, including Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Rod Stewart, Bob Knight, Ted Kennedy, George Steinbrenner, Tim Russert, Luke Ravenstahl, and more. The ties come with a caricature by the excellent Pittsburgh artist Kyle Holbrook.

Why The Pirates Still Suck and What You Should Do About It

The Pirates have been employing stopgaps in center field since Andy Van Slyke left town. And first base, and shortstop, and second base, and......
The Pirates will never get Saltalamacchia. The Braves will want Snell or Gorzo in return. Littefield will offer Armas and the Braves GM will hang up on him.
The Bill Simmons NHL draft article was the first enjoyable thing he's written since football season ended!!!!
I was thinking the exact same thing reading that Ron Cook article. Somebody woke up on the wrong side of bed. People should get mad if he ends up in Cleveland, its called a rivalry. Fans are just being fans.
I think his point was people were against him going to Cleveland because they think because he was a Steeler for so long, he should feel the same way about that city that most of us fans do. I think that's stupid, and Cleveland is one of the only places I'd like to see him coaching, it would make the rivalry that much better.
I don't really like Simmons, but I do enjoy when he writes something worth reading. It was pretty funny him saying how Esposito has the most Italian-sounding name since Vinny Testaverde. When I told my dad who we drafted, the first thing my dad said was "An Italian Boy!"
Haha Johnny, I said the same thing!
By the way, I'm sure a lot of us have watched wrestling at some point in our lives (even if we don't want to admit it), so I'd like all of us to send our condolences out Mondesi-style to Chris Benoit and his family who were all found dead in his home today.
Say what you want about wrestling, but dude was one hell of an athlete and entertainer.
GMT -8? Since when is Pittsburgh on the West coast?!
I refuse to read Simmons. In fact, the last time I read him start to finish was the day after the Patriots beat the Steelers in the season-opening MNF game of 2002. I honestly think he believes that the Patriots invented football.
With that, I offer my immitation of Bill Simmons reporting on the NHL Draft:
So I'm watching the NHL Draft (only because the Red Sox game is in a rain delay), and I'm amazed at how much this whole process reminds me of the Halloween dance from "The Karate Kid." All we need is Daniel wearing a #89 Wes Chandler jersey which, in NHL terms, is the equivalent of Alexandre Mogilny, who was never half the player that Cam Neely was.
Josh - My bad, since I now live in the PST.
Simmons is yuor typical Pat fan that just started enjoying football in 2002.
